Laugh Out Loud - When Stubborn People Converse About Music

This is a dialogue from last Saturday when several teens from my church had a hangout and our youth leader, J, was dropping us off at various places at the end of the day. I had claimed the front seat and therefore had immediate access to the music controls on the dashboard. My friend *cough* Ant, who was sitting at the back with another guy, had J’s phone and was playing music through the Bluetooth connection with the car’s speakers. J had just gotten back into the car after dropping off two girls with a parent, and the music volume was…lower than usual. Hehe 😅

Ant: Yo, Rachelle.

Me: Yeah.

Ant: Music.

Me: What about it?

Ant: Turn it up.

Me: *reaches for the volume* What’s the magic word?

Ant: Ha. Abracadabra.

Me: Nope.

Ant: Just turn up the volume.

Me: Not until you say the word.

Ant: Oh my days, Rachelle, turn it up.

Me: Nah.

Ant: Ok, are you able to raise the volume?

Me: Pff, yeah, I’m perfectly able to.

Ant: Then do it.

Me: Rude much. No.

Ant: Can you raise the volume?

Me: Yeah, I can.

Ant: So do it.

Me: No.

Ant: Why?

Me: You know why. That’s not how you ask.

Ant: Yeah, cuz I’m not asking you—I’m telling you.

Me: (with an offended air) Well then, I’ll definitely not do it.

Ant: Rachelle, THE SONG IS ENDING.

Me: I’m waiting.

Ant: You know, that’s being disobedient.

Me: *rolls eyes*

Ant: Rachelle, ongeza sauti.

Me: Absolutely not.

Ant: Ongeza sauti!

Me: You’re not the boss of me.

Ant: Oh my days.

(By this point, J and the other teen, B, were just managing to contain their laughter)

Ant: I order you to put the volume up, Rachelle.

J: Ant, you don’t tell the boss what to do.

Me: Yeah Ant.

Ant: Will you turn up the volume?

Me: Still waiting for the word.

Ant: I’m not going to say what you want me to say.

Me: And I’m not going to do what you want me to do.

Ant: Ok then, we’ll sit here without music. Here J, take your phone!

(J takes the phone while still laughing his head off and then—silence for a few moments.)

Ant: So how was everyone’s day?

Me: *snort*

J: Rachelle, could you please turn up the volume?

Me: Sure, J!

(I increased the volume high enough to blast out anyone’s eardrums.)

J: See Ant, that’s all you needed to say.

Ant: Yeah it’s cuz I told her to. And she listened to me.

Me: *turns around to glare at him*

Ant: *grins*

J: Oh boy.

B: *sniggers*

P.S. “Ongeza sauti” means “increase the volume” but it could also mean “raise your voice.”
