Hello friends!
Have you heard the story of Jonah before?
Merely to recap, Jonah was a man who was commanded by God to go to the people of Nineveh, and warn them to repent of their sin. However, Jonah tried to hide from God, and, instead, boarded a boat which was heading the opposite direction of Nineveh.
Despite Jonah's efforts to thwart God's plan, God cannot be stopped. After sending a windy storm, and giving Jonah some "alone time" in a fish's belly, God gave Jonah a second chance to obey.
And this time, Jonah did as God said.
Maybe Jonah had Ichthyophobia.
Or maybe he knew that God was in control, and deserved his respect.
As children, we have been told to obey our parents, and to do as they say.
"My son, keep your father's commandment, and do not forsake your mother's teaching." (Proverbs 6:20)
"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right." (Ephesians 6:1 NASB)
"Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord." (Colossians 3:20)
As Christians, we are children of God.
"Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!..." (1 John 3:1 NKJV)
If we are children of God, then that would imply that God is therefore our Father! Meaning that as children of God, we ought to obey Him, just as we would obey our earthly parents.
Obedience is not the simple act of doing what one is told, but doing it with the right heart attitude and mindset.
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as though you were working for the Lord and not for people." (Colossians 3:23 GNT)
Alternatively stated, everything we do as God's children should be in obedience to God, and for His glory.
"Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31 NKJV)
The choice is yours to make.
Will you run and hide, or happily comply?
Great job on this post!
When you posted this I was on my way back from summer camp where the evening teachings were on the book of Jonah! What a coincidence!
Beautiful post of encouragement! Just in case you haven't noticed, there's a double negative in the first paragraph. But that's just a minor issue in an otherwise amazing post.
